INTRODUCTION

At the time of independence of Pakistan, there were only five prisons in Sindh Province. However, after independence twenty (20) new prisons have been constructed in Sindh. Sindh Prisons are under the administrative control of the Government of Sindh, Home Department Karachi. Inspector General of Prisons Sindh is head of the attached Department and the D.I.G Prisons are of Regional Heads of the attached Department. There is also a training institute of Sindh Prisons & CF at Sindh Prisons Staff Training Institute Nara Hyderabad. The D.I.G Prisons and Principal Sindh Prisons Staff Training Institute Nara Hyderabad are under direct control of Inspector General of Prisons & CF Sindh, while the Superintendents Prisons are under the control of the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons & CF Sindh of the regions concerned. The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons assist the Inspector General of Prisons & CF Sindh in administrative and financial matter as per rule 897---of Pakistan Prison Rules. The Inspector General of Prisons Sindh has to visit and inspect every prison at-least once a year to satisfy himself that the provisions of the prisons Act 1894, and rules, regulations, directions and orders made or issued there under, applicable to such prison are duly obeyed and enforced, and that the management of such prison is in all respect efficient and satisfactory. The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons have been assigned duties by the Inspector General of Prisons Sindh as per Rule 889--- of PPR. The Superintendent Prisons have to discharge their duties as per provision of chapter 39 of PPR. The Prisons in Sindh are divided into three Regions as mentioned below:-

1. Karachi Region.
2. Hyderabad Region.
3. Sukkur Region.

The Inspector General of Prisons & CF Sindh, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons and Superintendent prisons are custodian of the prisoners at provincial, regional and district level concerned. They are responsible for safe custody of the security of the prisoners, providing living, health facilities and court production, interview and reformation etc.
